Leonard Cheshire Disability Young Voices Guyana was part of a meeting with the President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, H.E. Bharrat Jagdeo, on 10 November. The President met with several disabled people’s organisations to discuss proposed initiatives for income generation for people with disabilities, among other issues.
As part of the Guyana Young Voices group’s lobbying of their government to ratify the UNCRPD, the country’s minister of health attended a Young Voices meeting on 10 September. The minister assured them that the government would ratify the Convention and the ministry will also support Young Voices to produce and perform a play aimed at changing attitudes to disability. Within the next three months members will take the play around the country.
Guyana Young Voices’ first activity was a leadership and empowerment workshop for people who had no previous exposure to disabled people’s organisations. Campaigners then facilitated workshops on human rights.
